Using our Complete Comprehension programme, we will focus on different text types including, narratives, non-chronological reports, classic fiction texts and stories from different cultures. As well as our Complete Comprehension, we will look at specific strategies around identifying the impressions we get from stories and texts about characters, settings and relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letters from a Lighthouse is a moving historical novel set during the Second World War. It follows twelve-year-old Olive Bradshaw, who is evacuated from London with her brother, Cliff, and sent to live in a lighthouse keeper\u2019s cottage on the Devon coast. When Sukie goes missing, Olive uncovers a mystery involving coded letters, secret maps and hidden truths. Through bravery, determination and kindness, Olive learns about courage, family and hope during difficult times. The story brings history to life and encourages readers to think about resilience, friendship and doing the right thing even when it is hard. We will write a diary as if we are Olive, reflecting on her sister going missing and exploring how she is feeling about the war. We will also write a narrative flashback piece based on The Piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mathematics<\/span> <\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Mathematics, pupils in Years 5 and 6 will develop their understanding of Geometry through learning about position and direction. They will explore how to describe and label the four quadrants on a coordinate grid and deepen their knowledge of geometric transformations, including the clear differences between reflection, rotation and translation. Alongside this, children will strengthen their measurement skills by converting between units and applying their understanding to real-life problems. They will also learn how to calculate the volume of shapes, building confidence in using mathematical reasoning and problem-solving strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Science, children will be learning about Living Things and Their Habitats, developing a deeper understanding of the natural world. Children will explore how living things can be grouped and classified, identify different types of habitats and consider how plants and animals are adapted to survive in their environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Year 6 curriculum, pupils will study formal classification using the Linnaean system, explore microorganisms, and learn about reproduction in plants and animals. They will also consider the impact of environmental change and the importance of conservation, encouraging curiosity, respect for living things and scientific enquiry skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical Education<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This term, children will develop their ball technique through tennis. The Year Five children will have nine weeks of swimming, where they will hone their technique and some will learn about life saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After half term, the children will continue with ball skills through cricket and we will complete the year with dance lessons by Believe Academy who will help us to choreograph dances for our production.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

French<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Le week-end. This term, children will learn how to tell the time in French as well as activities they may do at the weekend. They will use all of their new knowledge from the unit to present to the class in spoken and\/or written form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Music, we will be looking at the Sing Up project Race! During this unit we will be creating a a piece of music to accompany a short film about a race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

PSHE<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In PSHE, children will be learning about Britain and One World over the term. These help them to understand their roles as responsible citizens in both their local community and the wider world. Pupils will explore themes such as diversity, equality and mutual respect, learning about different cultures, traditions and beliefs within Britain and beyond. The units encourage children to think about democracy, fairness and global responsibility, helping them to develop empathy, respect for others and an appreciation of how communities and countries are connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our Art lessons, we will look at Lowry and his matchstick men. We will use sketching techniques to create our own war pictures in the style of Lowry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geography<\/span> <\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Geography, pupils will develop their understanding of the world through the context of World War II. Children will identify and classify the countries involved in the conflict, locating them accurately on maps and learning about their capital cities and geographical position. They will also study The Blitz<\/em>, exploring why key UK cities such as London, Liverpool and Birmingham were heavily targeted during air raids, linking geography to historical events. Through the use of a range of maps, pupils will describe and interpret the locations of air raids during World War II, strengthening their geographical vocabulary, map-reading skills and understanding of how place and location influence events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In History, pupils will study a significant event in British history by exploring life for children during World War II and the Home Front. Learning will be structured around the enquiry question, How did World War II change life in Britain?<\/em> Children will develop their understanding of chronology by placing World War II on a timeline in relation to previously studied periods, such as the Victorians, and identifying key events leading up to the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will examine a range of historical evidence, including diary entries, newspaper reports and local history. The unit will focus on the significance of events such as evacuation and The Blitz, helping pupils understand the impact of the war on everyday life while developing historical vocabulary including evacuation, rationing, Allies, Axis, Nazi, Blitz<\/em> and Home Front<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
